After leaving Dorney Park at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Kaylee, Bernard, and I sat down to eat a quick lunch and figure out what we wanted to do for the rest of the day. We had driven 2.5 hours up to Dorney and weren’t ready to call it quits. After tossing around a few ideas, I looked online and saw that Six Flags Great Adventure (SFGAdv) was open until 9 p.m. We were a little over an hour away and I knew we’d have plenty of time to catch some rides. I asked the two of them what they thought.
Bernard laughed saying he was just at SFGAdv on Thursday as park of a jump team from Six Flags America (SFA), where both he and Kaylee work. Nevertheless, both liked the idea since they had some coaster credits yet to experience at the park. And with that, I was headed back to SFGAdv for the second time in six days. The best thing about both those visits was the fact that neither were planned and both came after visits to different parks in Pennsylvania. Last week it was Sesame Place and this week, Dorney Park.
Kaylee Nabs 1 of 2 Needed Credits
After getting a new credit in Woodstock Express at Dorney Park, Kaylee was excited to be getting two new credits at SFGAdv. She needed both the devils in Lil’ Devil Coaster and Jersey Devil Coaster. Sadly, Jersey Devil was down every time we looked. The sign in front of the queue said it was closed for the day, but a user on Instagram commented that it opened around 8:30 p.m. From 8:45 p.m. to close we rode Nitro non-stop and never saw Jersey Devil run once. Not sure if was ran and went back down, or if it actually ever opened at all.
When I visited SFGAdv last week I focused in getting in lots of rides on a few select coasters. This visit was more about variety, especially since Bernard hadn’t experienced a good number of the rides we ended up riding.
Joker
The first ride we aimed to do upon arrival was Joker. When we walked over to the ride, we saw that it was down. Seeing some testing going on, we jumped on Harley Quinn Crazy Train in the meantime. By time we finished, Joker was back up and running and was a walk-on.
We were motioned to the purple side in the queue, which for some reason, just seems to ride better. Several other enthusiasts I know, including Kaylee, all think the same thing – that the purple side is a smoother, more enjoyable ride. All my earliest rides on Joker came on the green side. It wasn’t until I was placed on the purple side that I came off the ride saying, “That wasn’t so bad.” Oddly enough, every visit since that ride, I’ve only been sat on the purple side – getting good rides every time. Now I’m looking forward to riding the green side again to see if it’s true or just some mental thing.
Superman: Ultimate Flight
Had Jersey Devil Coaster been running Saturday, I don’t think we would have walked over to Superman: Ultimate Flight, Green Lantern, or Twister. The only ride we were looking to do over that way was Houdini’s Great Escape, but it ended up being down when we walked over. It did eventually re-open, but during its downtime, we hit up the two coasters and Twister.
As I’ve come to expect, I had a nice smooth rides on this Bolliger & Mabillard (B&M) Superman: Ultimate Flight clone. I’ve ridden two of these with the other being at Six Flags Over Georiga (SFOG). I always said I preferred these to the Vekoma Flying Dutchman models due to their comfort and train configuration. Recently, however, I’ve gotten to ride Batwing at SFA more than usual and I started to notice that the ride itself is more intense, with a bit more “attitude,” if you will. As with B&M, their version is more graceful. Now I’m debating internally if I like Batwing better than these Superman clones. I also enjoyed the two rides I got on Firehawk at Kings Island in the past. Nighthawk at Carowinds, although beautiful to look at, has always been my least favorite large-scale flying coaster.
Nitro
During our initial trek through the park, we rode once Nitro and then moved on. I wanted more rides on my favorite B&M hyper coaster and hoped we’d be able to make it happen before the park closed. Luckily for us, we had about 15 minutes left when we worked our way back that way again. We managed three more amazing night rides, with the only downside being the stupid teenagers sitting all around us.
I’m all for kids being kids and having fun, but some of the stuff being said was highly inappropriate. Worse than that, one kid pulled out his phone two different times during these three rides. The first time happened on our first ride, approaching the turn around by the lake. I yelled at him to put his phone away and he did seconds later, although I did get a dirty look back in my direction. He also pulled it out for a moment on our third ride, with Kaylee saying something that time. If it wasn’t closing time, I would have most likely said something to the rides ops after we returned to the station.

Lots of Rides, but Not a Lot of Photos
Other than not getting in a ride on Jersey Devil Coaster or Batman the Ride, which was also closed, the evening turned out to be a great one in terms of ride variety. Sadly, I didn’t come away with too many photos from this visit. I didn’t want to waste our time stopping for photos, especially since I had taken a bunch last week. I did manage a few night photos and motion trail shots, like the ones of Green Lantern and Superman shown above. I figured they’d be something a little different for the SFGAdv Gallery once I get it published to the site.
I’m not sure if this will mark my final visit to SFGAdv for the season or not. It’s not like I thought I’d be going either of these last two visits anyhow. I know Kaylee really wants to ride Jersey Devil Coaster, so maybe we’ll be back up again soon. I’m also thinking Sam and Greg might be up for one last visit before 2022. We shall see!
