Sometimes ideas come to you and you just have to make them happen. That was the case on Thursday evening when I was on the way to pick up Sam for dinner. Wednesday night and into Thursday, this area was treated to a couple of inches of that nice, fluffy snow. You know, the snow that lays on everything, but is so soft and light? Yeah, that kind! That’s when it hit me.
I should go to Hersheypark on Friday and see if I could shoot some snow-covered coaster shots. Before you ask, no the park was not open, but I know from experience that there are many public places outside the park that afford some amazing photo opportunities. Why not give it a shot? My mind was made up. Sadly, Sam had to work on Friday, so I’d be venturing alone.
Now, let me explain why I’m talking about going to Hersheypark in a blog clearly titled, “Dutch Wonderland” and featuring a photo of Kingdom Coaster. You see, when I got home later that night and began preparing my camera equipment, I had another idea. Why not add Dutch Wonderland to the mix? The two parks are not far apart from each other. I also knew in the back of my head that Kingdom Coaster, if the snow was laying on it, would easily result in some of the best pictures from either park. Once again, my mind was made up.

Thankfully when I got to Dutch Wonderland there was a good amount of snow still laying on this junior-sized Custom Coaster International (CCI) woodie. Back when I visited the park last August to experience Merlin’s Mayhem for the first time, I took a lot of amazing photos of Kingdom Coaster from outside the park. On that day, I had a ton of great pictures before I had even entered Dutch Wonderland. With that success, I used the same exact spot for yesterday’s photos. I just find this coaster to be so photogenic! Don’t you agree?
If you’re wondering why there are no photos of Merlin’s Mayhem or Joust in this gallery, it is because neither coaster really lend themselves well to photos from outside the park. Merlin’s does poke up above the skyline, but I was what was sticking up high enough to see wasn’t covered in snow. Without the bright blue skies, I decided to just stay focused on Kingdom Coaster. I really would have loved to be able to shoot some Merlin’s Mayhem photos from inside, however. The landscaping, especially the pond region, would have looked amazing with that bright yellow and blue track above. I’ll have to see if Dutch Wonderland posted any photos themselves as many of the parks do after a snow shower. I’m sure they’re great, if so.
Even though I came away with photos of only one of the park’s three coasters in this gallery, I’m so happy I decided to add Dutch Wonderland to the day’s plans. I hope you enjoy the photos below. They’re only a small portion of what I took.
